REUNION
The French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean is a multi-facetted destination: as well as opportunities to relax such as hiking at altitudes of up to 3000m and diving in fish filled coral seas the evident harmony of many different groups of people, white, colored, Muslim, Christian or outside current religions makes a distinct impression. Here there is a convincing 'modus vivendi' which clearly works even though the social conditions are not perfect. For example, the very high number of adult unemployed leads to a lack of motivation amongst young people who naturally do not see the sense of a good education if after completion there is no work. | Visitors who are not interested in this aspect of the island can, however, be sure that it remains in the background against the constant warmth of the Creoles. Anyone who witnesses a display of nature such as the eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise (the picture was taken in November 2002) will keep Reunion in their memory as an experience one can scarcely imagine never mind describe ... . |
