ARGENTINA

Mate, wind and natural wonders - each of these is characteristic of Argentina in its own way. Mate-tea is 'celebrated' in repeatedly filling a beaker with hot water and passing it round. If you are invited to take part as a stranger, you feel accepted and enjoy at the same time the taste of wild flower meadows. Anyone who has been to Patagonia understands something completely new under the word 'WIND': it is always windy and the wind comes from all directions and every night shakes all accommodation. And then the animal world on the Valdez peninsula where sea elephants fight bitter battles and the sea lions are not even safe on land:

the orca whales have learnt to throw themselves onto the beach with the right wave, to catch a sea lion and to slide back into the sea where the catch is shared with the family - then the sea for a short time becomes dark red. This is not for those with weak nerves, but the funny Magellan penguins, one colony further on, quickly bring back the humor.

Tip: Orcas can be seen at particular times of day and at particular places on the coast. The Valdez gamekeepers can predict this almost to the minute.
