BOLIVIA

'Copacabana' normally conjures up an image of the Atlantic coast in Rio de Janeiro rather than the place of pilgrimage in Bolivia. There are, however, similarities in that Mary the mother of God is said to have appeared to an Inca descendant in their sleep who then carved her in wood. Many miracles were later accredited to this figure including the salvation of a sailor near Rio de Janeiro who promised to build a chapel dedicated to the Virgin of Copacabana should he survive the storm. He did this on the beach at Rio and gave the beach its name. From Copacabana you can sail to various islands in Lake Titicaca.

At about 3812m it is the highest navigable lake in the world. If you are interested in mythology, you should visit the Island of the Sun where according to Inca mythology Mancu Capec and Mama Ocllo appeared to found the kingdom of the Incas. The neighboring Island of the Moon is also considered a holy place and the Inak Uyu convent is located here - or Virgins of the Sun.

Tip: We organized everything locally without booking in advance. This was no problem at all.
