We visited Chile in 2000 and 2001. The Atacama Desert in the north of the country is unforgettable with its salt lakes, geysers and the Moon Valley, which at least at sunset gives the impression you were really walking on the earth's satellite. In the south volcanoes call to be climbed! Villarica in Pucon is situated in very impressive countryside. Walks through colorful gorse woods offer a stark contrast to the ancient Araucarian forests which are situated somewhat higher. Hiking in the Torres del Paine national park is a must (even if this is a great burden to the travel budget!). | If you visit the Club Aleman (e.g. in Puerto Montt) you will be almost embarrassed by the warmth and courtesy of the service (the crockery with eagles on red and gold is well meant, but white china would suffice!). In one of the most southern towns in Chile, Punta Arenas, you can fulfill a runner's dream and jog along the Magellan Straits. |
