In 1988 you could travel up the Yangtze from Wuhan to Chongquing in 5 days or the other direction in 3. We decided on the first alternative and were so pleasantly surprised by the Chinese 'ship' that we could happily have continued for a few more days. Buying the ticket in Chongquing station was very impressive! After waiting an extremely long time in a queue we gave the official our note with the following text in Chinese 'A ticket for the sleeping car to Kunming on...at 10.00'. The official wrote lots of new symbols on our paper and then closed the ticket window. | To our increasing confusion this repeated itself at the next ticket window. The puzzle was only cleared up in the hotel: on our note it said, several times: 'We're having a lunch break now... come back at 14.00'! |
