Guilin is in the north of the autonomous Guangxi region of the Zhuang nationality and is a cultural town with a long history and beautiful countryside. Lijiang, the Li river rises north of Guilin and flows past Wuzhou in the Xijiang the west river. The karst mountains on the river are extremely impressive. The hills rise directly from the plain and the Li river winds in large curves round the often strangely formed rocks. The Chinese like to claim that 'the countryside around Guilin is the most beautiful under the sky'. | On the river you can often see fishermen with their trained cormorants. A tight string is tied round the bird's neck which allows the bird to breathe, but not to swallow. When it catches a fish it really 'gets stuck in its throat'. The fisherman rescues the bird on his return to the boat, puts the fish in the basket and the 'relieved' cormorant flies off to the next catch ... . |
