Celts, Anglo-Saxons and Normans: before 1066 when the French Normans defeated the Anglo-Saxons at the battle of Hastings and the Norman William II became king of England, the native Celtic population of Britain had already been banished to the hilly and infertile areas. Today areas with strong Celtic elements are in Devon, Cornwall, west Wales, Scotland and of course the whole of Ireland. If you know Brittany you will immediately feel at home in Cornwall with regard to the architecture and atmosphere. You can travel even further back in history at Tintagel in north Cornwall. | If you believe in myths and the local tourist office, Camelot, King Arthur's castle is here and his round table. In Tintagel there is also the 'Old Post Office', a small earthy little house which for a long time served as the post office. |
