ENGLAND - WINDSOR

Windsor Castle is from the time of William the Conqueror and for more than nine centuries has been the residence of the kings and queens. It is by far the oldest royal residence which is still used. The building began in 1070. The castle was only renovated in 1992 after a fire. It was originally built as a fortress to defend the English capital along with the Tower of London. Two of the official royal residences are in the capitals, London (Buckingham Palace) and Edinburgh (Holyrood House) and only Windsor Castle is located rurally. St. George's Chapel is very impressive. It was built on the order of George IV in 1475 and is today one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in England.

St. George's Hall is equally interesting as it was completely renovated in 1992 after the fire and today is still used by the Queen for state banquets. The state apartments are also open to the public and are richly decorated with paintings of Rubens, Holbein and Rembrandt, sculptures and fine tapestries. Queen Mary's Dolls' House with its perfect miniature rooms and furniture will cast a spell on anyone. It was made in 1920 on a scale of 1:12.

Tip: Save a lot of time for Windsor - it really attracts the tourists.
