TIERRA DEL FUEGO

It's not possible to go much further south: Tierra del Fuego, the stormy island world between Antarctica and Patagonia is the most southern tip of the American continent and the end of Ruta 40 the Panamerican Highway. From Ushuaia it's possible to go on trips and hikes in the area and hopefully also succeed in taking a dream photo of the kingfisher who has just caught a fish. If you sail into the Beagle Channel you quickly come across sea lion colonies and smaller islands where many sea birds live.

The forces of nature in control here quickly become evident on examining an historical map of Cape Horn: many crosses mark the places where ships have gone down to high seas and storms.

Tip: the tours in the national parks all begin from the harbor. With basic Spanish you can organize everything yourself. Otherwise it means calculating sufficient money for Ushuaia (in 2001 a plastic beaker of coffee in the airport cost $4).
