FRANCE

Of course France is a 'must'! If you are interested in following the varied history of France then a trip from Nevers along the Loire offers a good chance to learn about the last 800 years through its many chateaux. You can go back even further if you reach Brittany: about 300 BC an unknown people began to put up enormous stones and gave the age its name. The legacy of this megalithic culture (Greek: mega lithos = large stone, rock) can be found on Malta, Sardinia, in England (Stonehenge) and Spain.

As in Brittany from Jordan to the Orkney Isles these monuments are found mostly on the coast. The stones are called menhirs and the stone chambers and/or tables dolmen. These names come from the Breton language: ar-men-hir = longer and dol-men = stone table.

Tip: Visit Carnac and solve the riddle?
