Of course France is a 'must'! If you are interested in following the varied history of France then a trip from Nevers along the Loire offers a good chance to learn about the last 800 years through its many chateaux. You can go back even further if you reach Brittany: about 300 BC an unknown people began to put up enormous stones and gave the age its name. The legacy of this megalithic culture (Greek: mega lithos = large stone, rock) can be found on Malta, Sardinia, in England (Stonehenge) and Spain. | As in Brittany from Jordan to the Orkney Isles these monuments are found mostly on the coast. The stones are called menhirs and the stone chambers and/or tables dolmen. These names come from the Breton language: ar-men-hir = longer and dol-men = stone table. |
