HELLAS - ATHENS

The beginning of western civilization has in the meantime become decadent and presents itself to the visitor as pretty chaotic and also expensive. If you come here hoping for inspiration from Heraclitus and Democritus you could be quickly disappointed when instead of these wise Greeks Albanians and Russians not always seeming to be so trustworthy cross your path. Naturally you will want to climb the Acropolis once in your life. As a newcomer you should ask at the hotel about guided tours. Equally popular are one day island hopping tours from Piraeus with a short stop in each harbor.

Apart from a few typical tourist traps you will receive friendly service and sufficient choice in the many tavernas. The meals are more or less typical Greek and pretty acceptably priced. Should you feel a bit queasy on your return to the hotel this is probably due to an overkill on the retsina and / or ouzo: there's something in them ... .

Tip: Greece is worth many trips. If you don't have to go to Athens (e.g. on business) I recommend going to the provinces.
