INDONESIA - LOMBOK

Before the last ice age the western Indonesian Islands of Sumatra, Borneo (Kalimantan), Java and Bali were still connected to the Asian continent. The deep straits of Lombok, the neighboring island to the west of Bali are therefore seen as the geological border between Asia and Australia. This is evident in the countryside as well as the animal world: tigers, orangutans, large python snakes are native to the tropical eastern islands whereby marsupials, parrots and enormous monitors are more likely to be found on the drier eastern islands.

A secret tip from the 80s: The small island of Gili Aire lies between Bali and Lombok - even if you only want to visit it from Lombok you somehow seem to first come back after a week. Why? Try it out!

Tip: Try duran ice cream in Mataram on Lombok - it's hardly possible to be more exotic: ice cream with a taste of garlic?
