CANARY ISLANDS - EL HIERRO

El Hierro is the smallest Canary Island being about 280 square km. There is a population of 7,000 and the island suffers from a lack of perspectives for young people and they prefer to leave. Some tourism, agriculture, animal husbandry and a bit of fishing - island life is quiet and the islanders call their island 'La isla de la tranquila diferencia' - this is not without grounds as this means the island of the quiet difference.

The island is not without records! According to the Guinness Book of Records the 'Punta Grande' hotel is the smallest in the world with only 4 rooms.
 
Tip: In one of the bays there is a very beautiful Parador hotel. Even if houses in the centre of the island are tempting a couple of nights here are well worth it.
