CANARY ISLANDS - LA GOMERA

The diameter (east-west) of La Gomera is 25 km and from north to south about 22 km. This comes to about 328 square km for the second smallest Canary Island. The centre of the island with the highest peak at 1487m, the Garajonay is between 800 and 1000m high. If you go to La Gomera you'll be primarily interested in the luxuriant and diverse flora which has a lot more to offer than the fauna. When looking for plants you'll have a completely different experience at each altitude. La Gomera can be divided into different altitude regions: coastal area (0-400m), montan level (200-800m), Monte Verde (600-1,500m) and finally Fayal-Brezal-formation (1,000-1,500m).

The area of the evergreen rain forest is full of laurel forest from about 600m. This is also called Bosque del Cedro by the locals. If you are looking for jungle in Europe you'll find the best here. The native laurel trees grow up to 30m high and in the higher vegetation level replaced by mixed moor land forest grows to a height of 15m.

Tip: Find out about the whistling language of the Gomeros. El Silbo was already described in the 15th century.
