There are volcanic moon landscapes, black and white beaches, mass tourism and isolated idyllic spots - but where does the name come from? Three alternatives are regarded as possible for the origin of Lanzarote- firstly the Genoan Lancellotto Malocello landed here in 1312 and gave it its name, secondly it could come from the Frenchman the noble Lancelot who almost 100 years later accompanied the first settlers, or the third story that the Norman knight Jean de Bethancourt was so happy to have taken the island peacefully that he broke his lance throwing it into the air shouting 'Lanza rota!' (broken lance)! | A highlight of the island are the works of art and houses of the well known artist Cesar Manrique. They make an impressive synthesis of art, country typical style elements as well as the volcanic scenery of Lanzarote in which they are integrated in different ways. |
