USA - BALTIMORE

Baltimore was founded in 1729 in a natural harbor as a trading post. It has since developed into Maryland's largest town with 650,000 inhabitants. Many European immigrants of different ethnic backgrounds arrived in the States here and gave the town its continuing image as a multicultural centre. In Baltimore the first train operated in the United States and also the first telegraphic connection. From about 1970 Baltimore has succeeded in making an architecturally interesting town centre out of an unsightly, ugly industrial town.

The harbor area which deteriorated in the 1950s has today also become an attractive restored area with a congress centre, elegant boutiques and excellent restaurants. Other suburbs which increasingly were threatened by decay were rescued from ruin in unusual ways and made into attractive residential areas. The residents could buy a house for a token $1 with the condition that they renovated it.

Tip: Tip: A harbor tour is always worth it.
