When gold was found in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada in 1849 the settlement of San Francisco was founded in the bay. Today it is the third largest city in California after Los Angeles and San Diego. San Francisco is spread over 40 hills in the north of a peninsula, bordered on the west by the Pacific, in the north by the Golden Gate arm of the sea and in the east by the San Francisco Bay. Symbols of the city are the Golden Gate Bridge, the exit to the north and the Bay Bridge in the east. Throughout the city there are many Victorian houses. | An interesting suburb is Fisherman's Wharf. From here you can travel by ship to Alcatraz the prison island, where only Burt Lancaster and Steve McQueen succeeded in escaping! The cable car also starts here and is still a much loved form of transport for both tourists and locals e.g. to downtown San Francisco. |
