Washington is the capital of the United States. In 1783 the congress of the United States decided that the nation needed a permanent capital. George Washington chose the location and it was named after Christopher Columbus (D.C. District of Columbia). The seat of government has been here since 1800 - this date marks the completion of the Capitol which was begun in 1793. All the presidents have lived in the White House with the exception of George Washington who did, however, choose the site. The president's house was burnt down in 1814 by British troops and later restored in white - hence the name. | The air and space travel museum is probably one of the best known museums of all the Smithsonian Museums along the Mall. Charles A. Lindbergh comes back to life here, John Glenn's Mercury Capsule inspires again and the Apollo Moon Module reminds us of the 'small step which was a great step for mankind'. |
