METROPOLIS: MADRID

If you have the chance you should visit the Prado-Museum as well as famous buildings such as the Royal Palace or the Plaza de Armas. As with the Louvre in Paris you need a good viewing plan as the quantity of masterpieces is extremely large. If Bosch, Velazquez and above all Goya are on your list then you have made a good start. The 'Garden of Pleasure' and the 'Triumph of Death' by Hieronymus Bosch have been excellently restored. The Goya collection alone fills many rooms. The Caprichos from the final dark years of Goya's life are alarming when, for example a giant holds a person like an ice lolly.

You can reach Picasso's masterpiece 'Guernica' in several minutes on foot from the Prado. The painting was originally for the World Exhibition in Paris and shows the bomb attack of Hitler's Condor legion on the small Basque town during the Spanish Civil War. In the Reina Sofia Museum a whole room is dedicated to this picture and the corridors show may sketches which show the path to the final painting. The museum, opposite the station, is named after the Spanish queen and is dedicated to contemporary art.
