VOLCANOES

The word 'volcano' comes from the Roman god of fire and his armourer Vulcanus. The Romans believed them to be on the south Italian island of Vulcano one of the Aeolian islands. Volcanoes are not all the same: some are explosive, some rather boiling over, some extreme, dangerous and some even count as good-natured, although here, for example, the chemical connection silicic acid plays a role. Why?

As with so many other things the answer to this is in the internet, but all possible knowledge does not replace the personal experience of hot smoke 10m away with lava flowing past from Piton de la Fournaise or the rhythmic growling of Stromboli or the rather mystical effect of Fujisan.

Tip: Read up on volcanoes in the internet.
